DME and ILS
September 1956 saw crew
training begin on the Instrument Landing System [ILS] at Sydney's Mascot
airport.
Australia's first Distance Measuring Equipment [DME] beacons were at Mascot / Yass / Corowa NSW / Essendon. An Ansett Airways DC3 did the first commercial flight using the DME equipment on the Sydney / Melbourne route on 24 Oct 1950. [Parnell / Boughton P.221]
