Australian National Airways Ltd [ANA], started by Sir Charles Kingsford Smith and Charles Ulm, operated its first flight New Years Day 1930 using the trimotor Avro Ten aircraft. These operated on the Sydney / Melbourne and Sydney / Brisbane route. [Job 1991 P.25] The Melbourne route had provision for refuelling at Wangaratta, if required. This airline folded not long after the loss of its "Southern Cloud" 21 March 1931, with the loss of 8 souls. [Job 1991 P.33]

The second Australian National Airways Ltd [ANA] was formed in August 1936. This grew out of the merger of Holyman's Airways and Adelaide Airways. Ansett acquired ANA 4 OCT 1957 to trade as Ansett-ANA. [Wilson J 1998 P.47]
