Many Australian railways, both Government and privately owned, selected the
ALCO based diesel electric locomotive when they decided to replace steam
locomotives in the 1950's. Altogether over 630 ALCO locomotives were used in
Australia with only 27 not built in Australia. Many of these operators again
selected ALCO units when they wanted to replace earlier delivered ALCO units
with more powerful modern units.
